Ukrainian hammer thrower Mikhail Kogan won the silver medal at the IAAF Continental Tour stage held in Brescia, Italy. The 2026 European Championship medallist delivered a consistent performance, sending the hammer to 78.78 metres and securing second place in the final standings. This is reported by Sport RBC.UA.

Kogan's performance in the throwing sector

Mikhail Kogan opened his series of attempts with a mark of 77.68 m, immediately asserting his claim to a podium finish. On his second entry into the sector, the Ukrainian athlete improved his result to 78.78 m, and it was precisely this throw that proved decisive in winning the "silver". His subsequent attempts brought no further gain: the hammer either failed to reach the required distance or was ruled invalid. In the end, Kogan held onto second place in the protocol until the final whistle of the competition.

Winner and medallists of the men's competition

The gold medal of the Brescia stage was won by Hungarian thrower Bence Galas, whose best attempt measured 80.67 m. Thus, the gap between first and second place was almost two metres. The bronze medal went to Germany's Soren Close, who rounded out the podium trio. For Kogan, this is not his first medal at a competition of this level in the current season, confirming his status as one of the continent's leading hammer throwers.

Women's competition: Klymets sixth, gold to Price

In the women's part of the programme, Ukraine was represented by Iryna Klymets, who had successfully competed at the Hungarian stage the day before, winning the gold medal. In Brescia, after her first two attempts, the Ukrainian posted a mark of 66.01 m, and in her best fifth attempt she threw the hammer to 68.36 m. In the final standings, this placed her sixth. The women's title was won by American Deanna Price with a mark of 74.50 m, edging out Italy's Sara Fantini by just 20 centimetres.

Context: Kogan's season and other successes in Ukrainian athletics

The performance in Brescia became yet another significant result in Mikhail Kogan's current season, in which he confirmed his status as a 2026 European Championship medallist. Earlier this season, Ukrainian throwers also delighted fans: in particular, Iryna Gerashchenko won the Diamond League silver medal, setting a personal record. The combination of these results testifies to the high competitiveness of the Ukrainian hammer throwing school on the international stage.
