The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Moldova has announced large-scale security measures along the state border with Ukraine. Amid ongoing regional escalation, the authorities have begun constructing special protective zones. These measures are designed to minimize risks to the lives and health of border police officers, civil servants, and civilians.

Background and Reasons for Emergency Measures

The need for fortifications and shelters stems from recent incidents near the Moldovan-Ukrainian border. Recall that on October 5, a shell hit a scheduled bus near the Palanca checkpoint. As a result of the emergency, a border guard was injured, and the bus and control infrastructure sustained serious damage.

Evacuation of Personnel from Joint Checkpoints

Parallel to construction, the Moldovan leadership decided to withdraw its personnel from joint checkpoints located on Ukrainian territory. Moldovan Interior Minister Daniela Misail-Nichitin confirmed that staff have already been evacuated from the Criva and Palanca checkpoints. Moldovan border guards will now serve exclusively on their own territory.

Comprehensive Response to Border Security Challenges

Experts note that these steps highlight the severity of current security threats in Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Ukraine is also strengthening its border infrastructure by planning to install 135 primary mobile shelters at 28 checkpoints and access roads across five regions.
