The National Bank of Ukraine set the official exchange rate of the hryvnia against the major foreign currencies for Friday, August 28, 2026. By the end of the working week, the regulator lowered the cost of both the dollar and the euro, which means a moderate strengthening of the national currency against the two key reserve currencies. Below are the details of the official rate and the factors that, according to experts, may influence the currency market in the coming days.
Official rate on August 28
According to NBU data, the official dollar rate on August 28 is set at 44.54 UAH, which is 3 kopecks lower than the day before. The euro, in turn, is valued at 51.85 UAH, down 15 kopecks compared to the rate on August 27. Thus, both major foreign currencies became cheaper against the hryvnia by the end of the week, with the euro settling noticeably below the psychological threshold of 52 hryvnias.
End-of-week dynamics
The decline in both currencies' rates on Friday continues the trend in which the dollar has held below the 45-hryvnia mark throughout the week. The strengthening of the hryvnia at the end of the week typically reflects the balance of supply and demand in the interbank market, as well as the activity of exporters selling their foreign currency earnings. At the same time, the gap in the pace of decline — 3 kopecks for the dollar versus 15 kopecks for the euro — indicates that the euro corrected more sharply than the dollar.
Logistics risks due to attacks
One of the key risks for the currency market remains the aftermath of Russian attacks and the associated logistics problems. Strikes on warehouses, distribution centers, gas stations, and transport and port infrastructure increase the costs for Ukrainian businesses. As Taras Lesovoy, Director of the Department of Financial Markets and Investment Activities at Globus Bank, explained in a comment for RBC-Ukraine, companies are forced to change routes, repair damaged equipment, build reserve stocks, and seek alternative logistics solutions.
Maritime logistics and agricultural exports
The expert also highlights the particular importance of maritime logistics, which plays a crucial role in Ukraine's agricultural exports. According to Lesovoy, export restrictions could lead to a smaller inflow of foreign currency earnings and increase the NBU's role in covering the supply shortfall of currency. This means that in the event of disruptions in the export of goods, the regulator will have to intervene more actively in the market to maintain the balance.
Currency market outlook
Under such conditions, the situation in the currency market will depend not only on domestic supply and demand but also on the ability of Ukrainian businesses to export goods uninterrupted and receive foreign currency earnings. As long as export flows are maintained, pressure on the rate from currency demand is contained; however, any new logistics disruptions can quickly change the picture and bring back volatility.
