The National Bank of Ukraine has updated the official exchange rates for Monday, October 19, 2026. According to the regulator, the cost of the US dollar against the hryvnia declined slightly, while the European currency, conversely, showed growth. Such adjustments reflect the current dynamics of the interbank market and the NBU's strategy to maintain exchange rate stability amid seasonal pressure on the hryvnia.
Dollar: slight decrease
The official US dollar exchange rate for October 19, 2026, is set at 44.86 UAH. For comparison: on Friday, October 16, the regulator recorded a figure of 44.88 UAH. Thus, the American currency fell by 2 kopiykas. This is the first noticeable drop in the dollar exchange rate over the past few trading sessions, which may be due to a temporary weakening of demand for cash currency from the population and businesses before the weekend.
Euro: rise by 19 kopiykas
The official euro exchange rate for October 19, 2026, was 50.49 UAH compared to 50.30 UAH on October 16. The European currency went up by 19 kopiykas, which is a more significant change compared to the dollar's movement. Analysts note that such spikes in the euro-to-hryvnia exchange rate occur periodically and do not always indicate a stable long-term trend.
Why the NBU focuses primarily on the dollar
In a commentary to RBC-Ukraine, Taras Kozak, founder and president of the UNIVER investment group, explained that when making decisions on the foreign exchange market, the National Bank focuses primarily on the dollar exchange rate, although it also takes into account the dynamics of the euro. According to him, simultaneously smoothing out fluctuations for both currencies is technically impossible. When one currency rises in price relative to the other, the fluctuations in their rates can be uneven, which gives rise to periodic sharp spikes in the cost of the euro.
Public reaction and panic demand
Taras Kozak draws attention to the typical behavioral reaction of citizens: seeing the euro become more expensive, people rush to buy the European currency, but subsequently the rate may go down. The expert emphasizes that such a panic reaction is not always justified and should not become the basis for financial decisions. One should not draw far-reaching conclusions based on short-term fluctuations in the euro-to-hryvnia exchange rate, as such changes do not always reflect a stable trend.
Context: pressure on the hryvnia in October
Earlier, according to business publications, in October 2026, the hryvnia is under pressure due to high demand for currency, trade deficits, expensive imports, and problems in certain export sectors. At the same time, analysts do not predict a sharp exchange rate jump, since the National Bank acts as the main stabilizer, smoothing out fluctuations through the sale of currency from reserves. Thus, the current rate adjustments for October 19 fit into the overall picture of moderate volatility characteristic of the autumn period of 2026.
