Over 1,100 people, including 55 Ukrainian citizens, missing in Nepal after floods and landslides

As of August 27, 2026, a large-scale search and rescue operation is ongoing in Nepal following catastrophic floods and landslides that struck the country's mountainous regions. According to the Nepal Police, the deaths of 177 people have been confirmed, while more than 1,100 residents and tourists are missing. Among the missing are at least 55 Ukrainian citizens, making the situation one of the most high-profile for the Ukrainian diaspora and the diplomatic service.

Composition of the Ukrainian groups

As clarified, this refers to two tourist groups consisting of 47 and 7 Ukrainians, respectively, as well as one Ukrainian woman who was part of a foreign tourist group. Local authorities emphasized that, at this time, there is no information about Ukrainians among the dead or the injured. Ukrainian diplomats are actively involved in the search operation and are coordinating their actions with local services.

Data from the tourism authority

The Nepal Tourism Board reported 644 missing travelers, including 517 foreigners and 127 Nepali citizens. The list of missing persons includes citizens of India, the United States, Ukraine, Malaysia, Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, and other countries. Search and rescue operations are being carried out in the Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Gorkha districts, however, reaching some of the affected areas is extremely difficult due to adverse weather conditions and significant road damage.

Contradictory data

Open sources record a discrepancy in the scale of the number of missing persons: according to police data, more than 1,100 people are missing nationwide, while the Nepal Tourism Board cites a figure of 644 missing travelers. The difference is explained by the difference in scope: the first figure includes all missing persons (local residents and tourists), while the second covers only registered travelers. Nevertheless, both sides agree that the exact data continue to be updated as the search teams make progress. It is also worth noting the dynamics: as of August 26, the number of missing Ukrainians was estimated at 53, and by August 27 it had risen to 55.

Scale of the operation and risks

In total, 7,415 security force personnel have been deployed to carry out the search and rescue operation in the affected areas. Nepali authorities warn of a real threat of new floods and landslides, which could further complicate the already difficult working conditions for rescuers. It was previously reported that a destructive flood hit the Nepal-Tibet border, affecting a vast mountainous area.
