Chronicle of the combined strike

In the night of August 20, 2026, Kyiv and the Kyiv region were subjected to an intense combined air strike. According to available data, the attack was carried out in several waves using ballistic missiles, air- and sea-launched cruise missiles, as well as dozens of attack unmanned aerial vehicles. An air raid alert in the capital was declared shortly after midnight, indicating the scale and preparedness of the offensive.

Dynamics of events and nature of damage

According to the operational briefing, the first wave of the attack consisted of groups of Shahed-type attack UAVs, which approached the city from the northern and eastern directions. Around 03:00–04:00 in the morning, the city was hit by a concentrated strike of Iskander-M / KN-23 ballistic missile complexes. Residents of all districts of Kyiv reported a series of powerful explosions and the operation of anti-missile systems. In the evening of the same day, repeat strikes and the fall of debris on non-residential buildings were recorded in the Holosiivskyi district of the capital.

Number of casualties and consequences for infrastructure

According to confirmed data from the State Emergency Service (SES) and materials from The Kyiv Independent, at least 15 people died in Kyiv and its suburbs. More than 40 people sustained injuries of varying degrees of severity, and dozens of injured were urgently hospitalized in city hospitals. The destruction affected multi-apartment residential buildings, a children's medical facility, a business center in the Holosiivskyi district, as well as energy infrastructure facilities.

Official reaction of the authorities

In response to the incident, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko declared August 21, 2026, as a Day of Mourning in the capital in memory of the deceased civilians. State flags were lowered in the city, all entertainment events were cancelled, and utility services were switched to round-the-clock mode to eliminate the consequences of the shelling. Local authorities are urging residents to remain calm and follow the recommendations of security services.
