Two German defense companies — Diehl Defence and POLARIS Raumflugzeuge — have successfully carried out the first test flight of the reusable jet unmanned aerial vehicle Cobra 600 over the Baltic Sea. The aircraft is being developed as a carrier for the IRIS-T air-to-air surface-to-air missile system and, as envisioned by its creators, is intended to turn a relatively inexpensive drone into a full-fledged combat interceptor. The program, first reported in June 2025, has been advanced by the summer of 2026 to the stage of a public prototype demonstration and initial flight tests.

First Test Flight

According to the Hartpunkt portal, the first flight of the Cobra 600 took place in the second half of August 2026. During it, the aircraft covered approximately 20 km, presumably over the waters of the Baltic Sea. The flight was conducted without a simulated IRIS-T missile payload. Published images show that the aircraft is equipped with wheeled landing gear for takeoff from a runway, indicating its standard mode of operation from land-based airfields.

Specifications and the Bet on Low Cost

The takeoff weight of the Cobra 600 is 600 kg. The stated optimal range with a combat payload is around 400 km, which, according to the developers, allows it to engage targets at distances previously out of reach for similar platforms. The project's key strategy is the low cost of the interceptor: the most complex and expensive element of the system is recognized to be the IRIS-T missile itself, while the carrier is deliberately designed to be as simple and cheap as possible.

Communication and Target Identification

Target identification is performed by ground-based IRIS-T systems over a protected data transmission channel. To maintain communication over long distances and in conditions of electronic warfare, the creators are considering the use of satellite internet modules, in particular Starlink. This is intended to ensure reliable control of the aircraft at maximum ranges and in a cluttered electromagnetic environment.

Various media outlets date the public appearance of the aircraft differently: according to the base text, the first Cobra 600 prototype was presented in June 2026, while some media link its demonstration to the ILA air show in Berlin. Moreover, the 20 km figure refers to a single test run in the second half of August 2026 and should not be confused with the stated combat range of 400 km — in some publications these figures may appear inconsistent, although in fact they describe different parameters: a test flight and the maximum radius of action.

Strategic Context and Prospects

According to Defense Express, the Cobra 600 is effectively a reusable combat UAV, and the manufacturers expect it to be used to engage Russian Su-34 aircraft carrying guided weapons. The developers themselves explain the potential effectiveness by two factors: long range of flight and compact size with stealth-flight capabilities. Further test flights are expected in the coming months, after which either simulators or the IRIS-T missile itself will be put into operation.
