On the night of July 16, the capital of Ukraine was subjected to a massive attack. According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, one person was killed and five others were injured of varying degrees of severity as a result of the strikes. The situation remains tense: rescuers and medical personnel continue to eliminate the consequences of the strikes in several districts of the city.
Chronicle of Destruction: From Fires to Damaged Buildings
As of 3:30 AM, information on the consequences was received from five administrative districts of Kyiv. The strikes hit both residential quarters and commercial and administrative facilities.
In the Dniprovskyi district, smoke was detected near a large shopping center. Additionally, a fire broke out in a dormitory due to falling debris. In the Desnyanskyi district, the strike hit an area of non-residential construction, where fires also broke out, engulfing parked cars.
Special attention from rescuers was required in the Solomianskyi district. There, a hit caused a fire in a supermarket building and a neighboring residential house. At another address in this district, debris damaged the windows of a residential building, forcing rescuers to evacuate a person from the second floor.
The situation in the Shevchenkivskyi district is also critical. Due to falling debris, a three-story extension to an administrative building caught fire. Reports indicate damage to more than ten cars. In the neighboring house, windows were blown out, and a fire also broke out in the non-residential construction area.
In the Sviatoshynskyi district, there were reports of a hit on a private residential house, however, information about a subsequent fire was not confirmed.
Air Defense Response and Scale of Threat
The Ukrainian air defense system did not operate at full efficiency during this night. Some ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down, however, not all targets were intercepted. Russia attacked Kyiv with ballistic missiles, which caused a series of powerful explosions and provoked strong fires throughout the city.
This is not an isolated incident: on the same night, hits on residential buildings and fires in shopping centers were already recorded in several districts of Kyiv. Medical personnel and firefighters continue to work at the sites, assessing the damage and providing assistance to the injured.
