In the night of August 20, 2026, Russia launched one of the largest combined strikes on Kyiv and the Kyiv region in recent times. According to figures announced by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, 30 residential buildings, a regular school, a children's hospital, and a kindergarten were damaged in the capital and the region. Air raid alerts in the capital lasted for about nine hours, with the main impact falling on the Kyiv region. More than 600 rescuers from the State Emergency Service and police were involved in eliminating the consequences in Kyiv, Brovary, and Boryspil.
Scale of the Attack and Air Defense Operations
The head of state called the strike "one of the most cynical, calculated, and large-scale," noting that the attack involved missiles of various types and 168 drones. According to him, Ukrainian defenders shot down all Russian "Kalibr" missiles, and the overall interception rate of cruise missiles was 93%, while a significant portion of the drones were also shot down. Zelenskyy emphasized that ballistics remain the greatest threat to Ukraine and that the ability to counter them depends directly on partners and the supply of missiles for Patriot air defense systems.
Consequences for Infrastructure and the Power Grid
In the Solomianskyi district of Kyiv, the upper floors of one of the buildings were destroyed, and fires broke out. Part of the capital was left without electricity: about 50,000 households have already been powered via reserve schemes, but approximately 40,000 homes remain without power. In Brovary, a hit on an industrial facility was recorded, while in the Boryspil district, private homes, warehouses, a gas station, high-rise buildings, and cars were damaged.
President's Reaction and Appeal to International Partners
Zelenskyy expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and emphasized the need to assist injured citizens. He also appealed to Ukraine's partners, urging them not to remain silent about the shelling and to actively assist the air defense system. In another statement cited in sources, the president promised a "fair and long-range" response to the massive strike, emphasizing that Russia had been preparing this attack for a long time.
Contradictory Data
There is a discrepancy between the statements and reports of the parties regarding the number of casualties. In Zelenskyy's address, cited by RBC-Ukraine, as of the time of the statement, 15 deaths were known in Kyiv. However, the UNIAN briefing cites a figure of 13 people killed in Kyiv and the region in general, and also mentions an attack on a border crossing point with Moldova, which is not reflected in the president's main statements. Thus, the exact number of victims and the full geography of the strikes may be clarified as rescue services continue their work.
Transport Restrictions
Due to infrastructure damage, "Ukrzaliznytsia" was forced to change routes and cancel part of the suburban and regional trips. The operational situation in the capital and the region remains tense, and restoration and clearance work continues.
