Famous Ukrainian choreographer Olena Shoptenko has shared romantic details of her wedding with her Austrian partner, Christian. The celebration took place in an intimate setting at a historic castle in Lower Austria, with the couple inviting only their closest friends and family members. According to the dancer, from the very beginning they consciously refused large-scale festivities, opting instead for a cozy family atmosphere.

Location and Rapid Preparation

For the ceremony, the couple chose the picturesque Schloss Hagenberg castle, located about an hour's drive from Vienna. Interestingly, Shoptenko was already familiar with this location, having previously considered it for her dance-therapy retreats. The preparation itself took a record-short time for Austria—only about a month and a half. The couple was fortunate: the needed date suddenly became available at the castle, and the marriage registration slot was secured about a month before the event, whereas ceremonies are typically planned six months to a year in advance in Austria.

Symbolism and Blending of Cultures

The wedding ceremony turned out to be deeply soulful and combined the traditions of both countries, symbolizing the birth of a new Austro-Ukrainian family. On the Austrian side, the newlyweds observed the tradition of sawing a log with a two-handed saw, which symbolizes the couple's readiness to overcome difficulties together. The Ukrainian part of the ceremony featured a traditional embroidered rushnyk (towel) that Olena and Christian stood on together. The choreographer noted that this moment was the most touching for her, as preserving her Ukrainian identity was essential, and her partner respectfully embraced her native traditions.

A Romantic Love Story

The couple's relationship story began long before the wedding. Christian proposed a year after the start of their romance by inviting Olena to a private dinner in a special cabin of the famous Vienna Riesenrad Ferris wheel in the Prater park. Despite the surprise proposal, the couple did not rush into marriage—about two and a half years passed between the engagement and the wedding decision. For the big day, the bride chose outfits by Ukrainian brands, wearing a closed textured gown by WONA Concept made to her measurements and delivered just a week before the ceremony without a single additional fitting.
