The prospects for concluding a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia this year are rapidly diminishing. According to the Ukrainian publication RBK-Ukraine, none of the existing peace initiatives currently find mutual agreement from both sides. The diplomatic breakthrough that many experts hoped for just a few months ago has given way to a hardline confrontation.
The Paradox of the Active Phase
Not long ago, the situation on the front lines and in diplomacy was different. Ukraine significantly intensified its strikes against the rear areas of the Russian army. The lack of breakthroughs by the occupiers and the growing internal dissatisfaction in Russia created an illusion that Vladimir Putin might be willing to enter into dialogue. However, reality proved harsher: the activation of Ukraine's counteroffensive strategy triggered the opposite effect in the Kremlin.
Instead of a desire to sit down at the negotiating table, Moscow demonstrated a determination to achieve its goals at any cost. The Kremlin's strategy is now focused on preparing another harsh winter for Ukraine, hoping to break the enemy's rear through the exhaustion of resources.
Crisis of Strategies
A source within the Ukrainian government structures told the publication about a fundamental problem: "Both sides lack a strategy for exiting the war." Diplomats admit that old concepts have ceased to work, and an active search for new ideas is currently underway.
In almost a year of negotiations, Ukraine has managed to convince Washington of the unacceptability of scenarios involving the voluntary abandonment of the Donbas territories. Ideas in the spirit of "Anchorage" were rejected by both President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukrainian society. American partners, in turn, for a long time did not understand such principledness from Kyiv.
Furthermore, the scenario of creating a "Donniland" — a free economic or demilitarized zone in Donbas — could not be realized. Although Ukraine was ready to discuss this compromise, it was Moscow that rejected the proposal.
New Hopes and the American Factor
The situation may change with the expected visit to Kyiv in August by Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. After the Ukrainian capital, the diplomats plan to visit Moscow. The Ukrainian side hopes that during these meetings it will be possible to "assemble" a viable option from various proposals.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also voiced support for resuming the dialogue. He stated that the negotiation process between Kyiv and Moscow could get a new chance in the near future, noting that new diplomatic steps are already being prepared. For now, the parties remain at an impasse, seeking a way out of the protracted conflict.
