Ambulance doctor and pediatrician from Kharkiv Oblast Igor Reveka died on October 16, 2026, in a Dnipro hospital while undergoing treatment after being hospitalized during basic general military training. According to the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, the cause of death was a malignant tumor of the sigmoid colon. Reveka was mobilized on September 25, 2026 — less than three weeks before his death.
Circumstances of Mobilization and Death
According to information provided by the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, Igor Reveka was mobilized on September 25, 2026. After arriving at the military unit on October 3, he was sent to a training ground for basic general military training, which includes instruction in weapon handling, orientation, and tactical medicine. As early as October 5, the serviceman was hospitalized with health complaints and remained in a medical facility until his death on October 16.
The regiment explained that newly arrived servicemen undergo basic general military training, during which they are assigned to positions as riflemen, grenade launchers, and assistant grenade launchers. Upon completion of training, servicemen are distributed taking into account their skills and civilian profession. The 1st Separate Assault Regiment noted that Reveka had been preliminarily assigned to a medical company and emphasized that his death occurred as a result of an illness unrelated to military service.
Biography: From Military School to Kharkiv Ambulance
The circumstances of the doctor's death were announced on October 22 by Zlatopil Mayor Mykola Baksheev. Igor Reveka was born on August 12, 1969, and grew up in Zlatopil (formerly Pervomaiskyi) in the Kharkiv region. He received his medical education at the Krasnohrad Medical College and Kharkiv Medical University. While studying at the university, he completed a military department training as a "military pediatrician-doctor" and received the rank of lieutenant.
Reveka also served conscription service in the Naval Forces, where he worked as a surface ship paramedic and reached the rank of chief ship warrant officer. In civilian life, he worked for many years as an ambulance doctor and pediatrician in Kharkiv. On October 26, 2026, Igor Reveka was bidden farewell in Zlatopil.
Ground Forces Inspection
On October 26, 2026, the Ground Forces announced the launch of an inspection into the circumstances of Igor Reveka's mobilization and his passing of the military medical commission. The inspection will also establish facts related to his stay in the military unit, training, and the circumstances of his death. The command stated that upon completion of the inspection, they will report on the established facts and decisions made in accordance with the law, urging not to jump to conclusions before it concludes.
Military Community Reaction
Commander of the 108th Separate Assault Battalion "Da Vinci Wolves" Serhii Filimonov reacted to the situation. He raised the question about the state of the unit's medical service if, in his words, a qualified doctor is involved in assault operations. Filimonov emphasized that commanders are obliged to distribute servicemen in accordance with their professional training, experience, and competencies, and called on the higher command to pay attention to such cases.
"A professional doctor in their place can save hundreds of lives. And this is also a matter of the unit's combat readiness," he wrote. At the same time, his claim about Reveka's involvement in assault operations contradicts the explanation of the 1st Separate Assault Regiment, which reported the doctor's preliminary distribution to a medical company.
Context: Other Cases of Conscript Deaths
Igor Reveka's case is not isolated. RBC-Ukraine previously reported that on August 6, 2026, a conscript born in 1980 died at the Korosten District Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center: after passing a military medical commission that found him fit for service in certain units, he lost consciousness, and subsequently his heart stopped. Another incident was recorded on May 5, 2026, in Dnipro, where a conscript stopped to check military registration documents died: according to the regional recruitment center, he felt ill during the military medical commission, and medics pronounced him dead after 45 minutes of providing assistance.
