The U.S. Department of Defense has decided to implement a new medical procedure aimed at monitoring the hormonal status of military personnel. Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth announced the launch of an annual testosterone level testing program. This initiative will soon become part of the mandatory medical examinations for men over the age of 30.

Voluntary Nature and Target Audience

According to the minister's statement, the mandatory nature of the check applies exclusively to male soldiers aged 30 and older. However, military personnel younger than this age are not excluded from the program: they will be able to undergo the examination voluntarily. This approach allows for the consideration of age-related physiological changes that may affect the performance of the personnel.

Medical Goals and Treatment Methods

The main goal of Hegseth's initiative is to ensure that American military personnel are in optimal physical and psychological condition. In the event of a hormone deficiency, soldiers will be offered testosterone replacement therapy. It is important to note that treatment is voluntary and not mandatory.

Experts, including sources from Bloomberg, point to the proven benefits of replacement therapy for men with low hormone levels. Taking medications allows for:

  • increasing overall energy levels;
  • improving sexual function;
  • normalizing mood;
  • increasing bone mineral density;
  • restoring body muscle mass.

Leadership Position and Criticism

Pete Hegseth emphasizes that the program does not aim to create "super-soldiers" or artificially enhance physical capabilities. On the contrary, it is intended to bring health indicators back to normal and support combat readiness. In a comment to The Guardian, the minister noted the severity of the modern battlefield, which requires maximum psychological and mental readiness.

"By identifying relevant health indicators early, we help you maintain a high level of combat effectiveness and provide you with the same support that you provide to this country," said the head of the Pentagon.

Despite optimistic statements, the initiative has raised questions among critics. Experts express concern due to the limited evidence base for the widespread use of testosterone therapy on a mass scale. Furthermore, the question remains open as to whether the new policy will apply to female military personnel.

Context of Reforms in the U.S. Army

Testosterone level screening is part of the large-scale changes that Pete Hegseth is implementing at the Pentagon. Special attention is paid to physical training and the health status of the personnel. This decision fits into the context of the largest reorganization of the U.S. Army in recent decades, announced back at the end of last year.

The reform plan involves reducing the number of officials and reducing the functional capabilities of army headquarters worldwide. Alongside internal reorganization, the U.S. armed forces continue to study the experience of using autonomous weapon systems, analyzing combat operations in Ukraine.
