The situation over the Baltic Sea has intensified once again. On the morning of August 4, a pair of Polish fighters was scrambled to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. The incident occurred 56 kilometers northwest of the city of Koszalin, located in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.
Official confirmation of the operation was given by Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. According to him, the actions of the Russian side are yet another provocation aimed at testing the vigilance and readiness of NATO defense systems. Warsaw views such flights as an attempt to gauge the Alliance's reaction near its borders.
A series of incidents in the skies over the Baltic
The events of August 4 are not an isolated case. Over the past few weeks, the airspace over the Baltic Sea has become the arena for regular tense contacts between Russian aviation and NATO countries. RBC-Ukraine notes that just a few days prior, on August 3, Polish fighters had already intercepted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft. On that occasion, the aircraft was flying with its transponder turned off, which complicated identification and created a threat to flight safety.
The situation regarding flight rule violations has occurred before as well. For instance, on July 31, an Il-20 electronic reconnaissance aircraft was detected over the Baltic Sea without a coordinated flight plan and with its transponder switched off. In the opinion of military experts, this action is a classic reconnaissance tactic, allowing the concealment of the true coordinates and intentions of the equipment.
Increased activity of Russian Su-30SM2 fighters
In addition to reconnaissance aircraft, there is also an intensification of fighter aviation in the region. On July 15, two Russian Su-30SM2 fighters approached the site of Polish air defense exercises. Their appearance required an immediate reaction from Polish forces, which were forced to keep their air defense systems on standby.
Another incident occurred on July 14, when an Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft approached Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea. A pair of fighters scrambled in response managed to intercept the aircraft and escort it into a safe corridor. These events demonstrate a persistent trend of growing tension in the region, where Russian aircraft regularly test NATO's boundaries of responsibility.
