On July 16, the bodies of 501 fallen were returned to Ukraine. The repatriation operation was the result of coordinated efforts by state structures and international partners. Official confirmation was received from the press service of the Coordination Headquarters for Dealing with Prisoners of War.

Repatriation details

According to the Russian side, among those repatriated are Ukrainian citizens, including military personnel. The bodies have been handed over for identification procedures. Investigators from law enforcement agencies, together with experts from specialized institutions, will begin the process of identifying the deceased.

Joint work of agencies

The successful conduct of the operation was made possible thanks to coordination between:

  • Coordination Headquarters for Dealing with Prisoners of War
  • Joint Center under the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU)
  • Armed Forces of Ukraine
  • Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine
  • Office of the Ombudsman of the Verkhovna Rada for Human Rights
  • Secretariat of the Commissioner for Persons Missing Under Extraordinary Circumstances
  • State Emergency Service of Ukraine and other relevant structures

Context of previous operations

This is not the first repatriation of such scale. On June 14, the bodies of 522 fallen were returned to Ukraine, and on February 26 — 1,000 bodies. According to statements by the Russian side, all of them may belong to Ukrainian military personnel. Each of these operations requires complex logistical and legal work, as well as international cooperation.

Significance for families and society

For the relatives of the deceased, repatriation is a chance to say goodbye and begin the process of recovery after the loss. For the state, it is an important step within the framework of humanitarian obligations and the protection of citizens' rights. Identification of the bodies will allow the completion of administrative procedures and ensure a dignified burial.
