A breakthrough in mobility: launch on the move
German defense giant Rheinmetall has made a significant step in the development of weapon systems by successfully demonstrating the launch of FV-014 loitering munitions from a containerized launcher mounted on a truck chassis while the vehicle was in motion. The tests took place at the National Test Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in Kochstedt. This event confirms that the system is ready for integration into mobile combat formations, where the ability to "shoot on the move" is a critical factor for survival and effectiveness.
During the demonstration, Rheinmetall engineers used their own HX truck. The FV-014 launch was conducted twice: first from a stationary position, and then while the vehicle was moving. This confirms the reliability of the catapult acceleration system, which ejects the drone from the transport container, after which it deploys its wings and transitions to autonomous flight.
Technical specifications and combat application
The FV-014 unmanned aerial vehicle is a complex that combines reconnaissance, target designation, and high-precision strike functions. The system has an operational range of up to 100 kilometers and a flight duration of up to 70 minutes. This gives the operator a sufficient time interval to search for targets, identify them, and make a decision to attack. Control is carried out via a ground station with constant situational monitoring.
The combat effectiveness of the FV-014 is confirmed by the characteristics of its warhead. With a take-off weight of about 22 kilograms, of which 6 kg is payload, the drone is capable of penetrating armor more than 600 millimeters thick. This makes it a versatile weapon, equally effective against armored vehicles as well as unarmored targets and enemy personnel.
Scalability and logistics
A key advantage of the new system is its logistical versatility. Launch is performed from a standard transport and launch container. Depending on the configuration, one launcher can hold up to 18 FV-014 units. This allows for the creation of mobile groups capable of deploying an entire "swarm" of drones onto the battlefield in a short time, creating a significant threat to the enemy.
The use of the container concept also simplifies the integration of the system into existing NATO and German army logistics. The HX truck used for the tests is part of a large contract: previously, the German army ordered more than two thousand such all-wheel-drive vehicles from Rheinmetall for a sum of about one billion euros. This opens up broad prospects for the mass deployment of the FV-014 system.
Context of robotic systems development
The successful testing of the FV-014 fits into the overall strategy of modernizing the armed forces of Germany and Europe. Previously, Rheinmetall, together with French partners, presented the concept of a super-tank with an unmanned turret and integrated drones, capable of operating as a command center for robotic complexes. The emergence of the mobile container launch of the FV-014 complements this ecosystem, providing mobile fire support and reconnaissance for ground formations.
