On the night of October 16, 2026, Ukraine's energy infrastructure was targeted by strikes once again. According to RBC-Ukraine, citing the Telegram channel of NPC "Ukrenergo", a drone attack on the main grid damaged the energy infrastructure supplying power to Rivne Oblast. The operator reported that this led to large-scale power outages in Rivne and the surrounding areas. The company emphasized that the damage specifically affected main grid elements, which determines both the nature and timeframe of restoring the electricity supply.
Scale of the outage in Rivne and the region
The operator is recording large-scale blackouts in Rivne and adjacent areas. The exact number of consumers left without power was not disclosed in the official statement; however, the wording "large-scale power outages" indicates that the disruptions affected a significant portion of the regional load rather than individual houses. For residents, this means potential interruptions in heating, water supply, and communications depending on the local power supply scheme, which is why the operator and local authorities recommend following official information channels.
Backup schemes and restoration work
Power engineers have already begun working to restore electricity to consumers via backup schemes. At the same time, "Ukrenergo" explicitly stated that full-scale emergency repair work on the damaged facilities will only begin once the security situation permits. This is standard procedure for damage occurring amid active combat conditions: power is first supplied through backup routes, and then, after the situation stabilizes, crews are deployed to directly repair the damaged grid elements.
Volyn and Lutsk: Restoration continues
Simultaneously, "Ukrenergo" clarified that restoration work is also ongoing in Volyn Oblast. In particular, the power supply networks of Lutsk were seriously damaged as a result of night strikes, and power engineers are actively carrying out repairs there. This confirms that the attacks on the energy sector are regional rather than targeted, affecting multiple western oblasts simultaneously.
Widespread damage to the energy system: Regions under attack
Earlier, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that strikes on energy facilities had been carried out since early morning. According to the agency, Kyiv, Kyiv Oblast, Volyn Oblast, Rivne Oblast, Kharkiv Oblast, and Odesa Oblast are under attack. The most difficult electricity supply situation remains in frontline territories, where attacks occur almost continuously. In the Odesa region, local sources report that following the night strikes, consumers are being gradually reconnected to the power grid, affecting hundreds of households returning to normal operations.
Call for energy conservation
"Ukrenergo" urged Ukrainians who still have electricity to consume it as sparingly as possible. At a time when part of the grid is operating on backup schemes, reducing the load helps stabilize the system and speed up restoration for those left without power. The operator recommends turning off unused appliances, shifting energy-intensive processes to daytime hours whenever possible, and following instructions from local utility companies.
