The British division of Rockstar Games is preparing one of the most large-scale collective actions in the history of the European gaming industry. From November 12 to 26, over 1,600 specialists from the Rockstar North studio — spanning virtually all key development areas — will hold a vote on recognizing their representative, the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB). The parties have already agreed on the official conditions of the procedure, making the process legally formalized rather than spontaneous.
Coincidence with the GTA 6 Release
A notable circumstance is that the voting process completely coincides in timing with the long-awaited release of Grand Theft Auto 6. Thus, the decision on union representation will be made during the most tense period for the studio — at the peak of public attention and production loads associated with the launch of the flagship project.
Reason: Late 2025 Layoffs
The catalyst for intensifying collective actions was the layoff of 31 employees from the British division at the end of 2025. According to the publication, this particular event provided the impetus for organizing an official vote on union recognition and moving towards formalized collective bargaining.
What the Team Will Get Upon Success
If the initiative is approved, the team will gain the legal right to influence a number of essential working conditions: salary and bonus amounts, overtime regulations, layoff procedures, flexible schedules, and — which is especially relevant for the modern industry — policies regarding the use of generative artificial intelligence in project production.
Management's Position and Significance for the Industry
Studio management is currently refraining from harsh opposition. Experts note that if the initiative succeeds, the gaming sector will see one of the largest unions in history, second in scale only to the Blizzard employee association in the US. According to analysts, such an event will set a precedent for the entire European game development industry.
