Ukrainian football is preparing a major change in the structure of youth leagues. Starting from the 2026/2027 season, the U-21 championship will officially return to the country. This decision has already found support among leading industry experts. One of the first to speak about the importance of this step was the head coach of Odesa's "Chornomorets", Roman Hryhorchuk.

The head coach's arguments

Roman Hryhorchuk, whose club has just returned to the elite division, sees the revival of the U-21 tournament as a key tool for developing the personnel reserve. In the specialist's opinion, the current system has gaps that the new format will help close. The coach highlighted three main advantages of returning the league:

  • Playing practice for the reserve. The tournament will allow the use of main squad players who did not make it into the Premier League match roster, keeping them in shape.
  • Mixed squad. The opportunity to play alongside experienced partners will give young footballers invaluable experience interacting with professionals.
  • Bridge between categories. This decision is critically important for players who have already outgrown the U-19 age category but are not yet ready for the full load in the first team.

Painless adaptation to adult football

Hryhorchuk placed special emphasis on the psychology and adaptation of young talents. He noted that some footballers develop slightly slower than their peers, and a sharp transition from the junior team to the main squad could be a shock for them. The U-21 League will become a buffer zone, guaranteeing a smooth immersion into big-time sports.

"This tournament will be very useful precisely for these guys who have outgrown the U-19 age category. Some footballers develop a bit late, and this will be a big guarantee that players will have a chance to transition to adult football painlessly," emphasized the coach of the "sailors".

"Chornomorets" returns to the elite

The coach's comment came against the backdrop of his team's successful performance in the past season. In the First League, the Odesa club took a confident second place, which ensured direct promotion to the next level. After a one-year break, "Chornomorets" is once again preparing for battles in the Ukrainian Premier League.

The new season will start for the Odesans at home. In the first round, Roman Hryhorchuk's team will host Zhytomyr's "Polesye". The match will take place on Sunday, August 2, at the stadium in Odesa. The start of the match is scheduled for 13:00.
