Diplomatic relations between Romania and Russia have reached a critical point. Romanian authorities have declared a Russian embassy official persona non grata. This decision is a direct response to a series of airspace violations recorded at the end of July. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued an ultimatum: the diplomat must leave the territory of the republic within five days.

Facts of violations and evidence

The trigger for the sharp deterioration in relations was events that took place between July 24 and 26. Over these three days, Romanian military forces shot down three unmanned aerial vehicles that illegally entered the country's territory. The Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially stated that the Russian Federation bears full responsibility for these incidents.

By order of the Foreign Minister, Oana Cîrstea, the Russian Ambassador to Bucharest, Vladimir Lipaev, was summoned to the ministry. During the meeting, the Russian diplomat was shown fragments of one of the destroyed drones. As emphasized by the Foreign Ministry, the prosecutor's investigation officially confirmed that the discovered components are of Russian origin.

Political consequences and Bucharest's reaction

The Romanian side expressed a firm protest, emphasizing the inadmissibility of such actions. In Bucharest, it was noted that this is not only a violation of Romania's sovereignty but also an intrusion into the airspace of NATO and the European Union. The country's authorities held Moscow responsible for the overall deterioration of the situation regarding regional security.

Following the meeting, the ambassador was handed an official verbal note demanding the expulsion of the diplomat. Simultaneously, the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned its ambassador in Russia to Bucharest for consultations. The ministry stated its intention to continue coordinating actions with NATO and EU allies, taking all necessary measures to protect national security.

The cost of protecting airspace

Protecting the borders came at a significant cost to Romania. Over the three days of operations to shoot down the three drones, the country spent approximately 1.5 million euros. According to media reports, F-16 fighter jets used AIM-9X missiles to intercept the drones. The cost of each missile is approximately $400,000. The final expenditure figure also includes costs for flights and aircraft maintenance.
