Andrii Demchenko, the spokesperson for the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, stated that the activity of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups (SRGs) in the northern sector has significantly decreased. He announced this during the national telethon while commenting on the current situation in the border areas. According to him, Russian SRGs continue trying to infiltrate Ukrainian territory, but overall their operations have noticeably weakened over the recent period.
Tasks set by sabotage groups
As Demchenko noted, Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups attempt to infiltrate Ukrainian territory for several purposes: to reconnoiter defensive construction, attack the positions of Ukrainian defenders, and mine the area. Thus, even with the general decrease in activity, individual incursions retain operational significance for border guards and defense forces in the border regions.
Dynamics: From October's peak to the current lull
"Over the recent period, the overall activity of Russian sabotage and reconnaissance groups has significantly decreased, but recently, within the Chernihiv and Sumy regions, they did possess such activity for a certain period," the SBGS spokesperson said. He emphasized that an increased level of infiltration was previously recorded precisely in the Chernihiv and Sumy regions, but now this indicator has dropped. To recap, in October, Russian SRGs became active in the border areas of the Sumy and Chernihiv regions, making the current decline a noticeable shift in dynamics.
Information operations as a tool of pressure
Demchenko specifically drew attention to the fact that Russia previously used the infiltration of sabotage groups for information operations. In particular, claims were made about the alleged capture of territories or the establishment of control over them. As an example, the spokesperson cited cases in the Chernihiv region where Russian saboteurs entered Ukrainian territory and planted a flag there, passing it off as a military victory. According to him, such actions were aimed primarily at generating an information hook rather than achieving a real operational result.
What this means for the border regions
The SBGS statement registers a relative lull in the northern sector following the autumn wave of activity. At the same time, the border service does not rule out the resumption of infiltration attempts, as the tasks of reconnaissance, mining, and attacking positions remain within the doctrine of SRG operations. For residents of the Chernihiv and Sumy regions, this means that the threat of individual incursions is not completely removed, even with a general decrease in intensity.
