The May heat in Odessa has suddenly given way to cool weather, and the sea has reacted instantly. If just a couple of weeks ago the water was inviting with its warmth, today meteorologists are recording a sharp drop in temperature to 15–16°C. For many who love to bask by the shore, this has been an unpleasant surprise: the warmth accumulated over spring has literally evaporated.

Nature is Capricious: Why the Water Has Become Icy

The culprit is the whims of the weather. Today, the Odessa region is expected to experience not only brief rain but also a powerful northwest wind. Its speed during the day will reach 12–14 m/s, creating a true storm effect along the coast. It is the wind that becomes the main 'cooling factor': it pushes the warmed upper layer of water out to the open sea, and in its place, cold deep waters rise. This process is called the surge effect, and it quickly changes the temperature regime of the coastal zone.

Doctors' Opinion: Swimming is Cancelled

Medical professionals categorically recommend against entering the water at current readings. A temperature of 15–16°C is considered too low for safe swimming, especially for children. Doctors emphasize that even a short stay in such water can lead to rapid hypothermia and serious health consequences. Specialists advise waiting until the water warms up to at least 20–22°C — only then can we talk about comfortable and safe water procedures.

What Should Odessites Do?

For now, it is better to limit yourself to walks along the embankment and enjoy the view of the sea without risking your health. Beach relaxation is possible, but only in a 'dry' format — with a book, coffee, and a warm blanket. As for swimsuits, it is worth returning to them a little later, when the weather stabilizes and the water becomes warm again.
