Germany has recorded an unprecedented surge in incidents involving unidentified unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the Bundeswehr's Operational Command, the number of reports of spotted drones is measured in the hundreds. This alarming trend, which began after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has shifted from being episodic to a category of regular threats to national security.
Escalation of Threat: From Isolated Incidents to Regular Flights
A representative of the Bundeswehr Operational Command confirmed that the statistics regarding the monitoring of Germany's airspace have changed radically in recent years. While such reports were previously rare, they are now maintained at a consistently high level. Military officials note that the nature of the threats varies: most often, it concerns individual unmanned aircraft, but periodically, coordinated actions of entire drone swarms are recorded.
It is important to note that the German military command has not yet publicly linked these flights to a specific aggressor country, maintaining diplomatic caution. Nevertheless, the very fact of hundreds of incidents indicates that the sky over the Federal Republic of Germany has become a zone of active reconnaissance or sabotage activity.
Leipzig Incident: Explosives and a Ukrainian Aircraft
One of the most resonant cases, shedding light on the real danger, was the incident at Leipzig Airport, which occurred on the night of August 5. As a result of the discovery of a suspicious object, the operation of the airfield was temporarily suspended. A drone equipped with explosives was found near the runway, where a Ukrainian An-124 cargo plane was standing.
Investigators conducted a thorough investigation at the scene. Antennas, presumably used to control the drone, were found, as well as DNA traces on the drone's body and the explosives. The examination showed that the drone was specially modified to carry out an attack. Currently, law enforcement agencies are checking for a possible Russian link in this case.
Hybrid Warfare: Sabotage as Part of Strategy
The problem with drones is only the visible part of the iceberg of a broader security situation that Germany is facing. The Bundeswehr admits that the country deals with various forms of hybrid threats on a daily basis. This list includes not only drone flights but also disinformation, fake news, cyberattacks, espionage, and sabotage.
Experts note that the experience of the war in Ukraine has demonstrated the vulnerability of Western infrastructure to new types of weapons. Drones have become a tool capable of penetrating areas previously considered safe, creating psychological pressure and a physical threat to critical facilities.

There is a discrepancy in the interpretation of the scale of the threat between official statements and the assessments of independent experts. On the one hand, a Bundeswehr representative emphasizes that mostly individual drones are recorded, which may indicate the reconnaissance nature of the flights. On the other hand, facts such as the incident in Leipzig with a modified kamikaze drone point to the existence of prepared sabotage groups capable of striking.
Furthermore, while German authorities do not name specific countries to blame, Ukrainian military experts, as reported by the media, directly point out that Ukraine's experience has "exposed Germany's weaknesses in preparing for modern war," implying that the methods used by Kyiv's opponents are now being applied against the Federal Republic of Germany.
