On the morning of September 9, 2026, Russian military forces struck a passenger train on the 'Kharkiv – Izium' route in Kharkiv Oblast with a Shahed-type drone. According to the Izium City Military Administration and Oleksandr Pertsovskyi, chairman of the board of Ukrzaliznytsia, as cited by RBC-Ukraine, the attack occurred at around 10:00. The drone hit the rear of the train at a railway station near Iskra village, after which a fire broke out. Emergency medical teams worked at the scene.

According to local authorities, at the time of the attack the train was at a station in the area of Iskra village. The drone's impact on the rear of the train caused a fire and significant scattering of debris. In the footage released by Oleksandr Pertsovskyi and the Izium City Military Administration, one of the carriages is visibly heavily damaged by fire: a burnt-through roof, deformed windows, and scorch marks on the body, while the neighboring carriage retained its paint but was also enveloped in smoke.

According to the administration, seven people — both railway workers and passengers — sustained mostly minor shrapnel injuries. All of the injured received medical assistance on site. The scattering of debris from the impact was substantial, which is consistent with the nature of the carriage damage captured in the photographs.

Statement by the head of Ukrzaliznytsia

Oleksandr Pertsovskyi explained that at the moment of the strike the train had been stopped for evacuation, which, in his words, allowed the crew and passengers to be saved from the worst consequences. He noted, however, that the scattering of debris from the drone impact was significant, which explains the nature of the injuries sustained. This statement underscores that even trains stopped for evacuation remain at risk during shelling of railway infrastructure.

The strike on the 'Kharkiv – Izium' train is part of a series of systematic attacks by Russian forces on civilian railway infrastructure and passenger trains in Kharkiv Oblast. At the end of August 2026, as a result of a drone strike on a station in Lozova Raion, where a train had stopped to evacuate people, two women were killed and five others were injured.
