There has been an unexpected shift in the Belarusian leadership's assessment of the military-political situation. While alarming signals about a looming aggression were previously heard, officials are now stating that the situation on the borders is stable. Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin, during a report to Alexander Lukashenko, provided an assessment of the current situation that differs radically from previous statements regarding "red lines" and threats.

Stability Instead of Threat

According to Khrenin, the military-political situation around the republic remains stable. The minister believes that the main tension has moved exclusively into the information space. In the course of analyzing the activities of the armed forces of NATO countries, the Belarusian side has not detected signs of preparation for a sudden attack.

Viktor Khrenin provided specific arguments to support his assessment:

  • Absence of significant activity on the part of NATO military structures.
  • Minimal number of exercises in neighboring countries (only one).
  • Limited number of military aviation flights.

"We do not see any threat, tension, or preparation for a sudden attack," the minister emphasized.

Situation on the Border with Ukraine

Special attention was paid to the southern direction. Previously, Deputy Head of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Igor Sekreta threatened Kyiv with a "stern response" in the event of a border crossing, outlining so-called "red lines." However, the rhetoric has now changed.

Khrenin stated that the Belarusian side does not detect signs of preparation for aggressive actions by Ukrainian military forces. "As of today, we do not see that Ukrainian formations providing cover for their border are preparing for any aggressive active actions," he added.

Security Regime

Despite the optimistic assessment of the situation, Minsk does not plan to lower the level of vigilance. A "minimum set" of special forces units remains on the southern border, which, together with border guards, ensure the security of the border zone.

Personnel training continues on a scheduled basis, taking into account the conclusions drawn after a comprehensive inspection at the beginning of the year. Thus, the Belarusian leadership is demonstrating readiness for any scenarios, even while declaring the absence of a direct threat of attack.
