The Ukrainian men's foil fencing team returned from Hong Kong with silver medals from the 2026 World Championships. This achievement was not just a reward for the season but an important signal for the entire team ahead of the start of the Olympic cycle. One of the team's leaders, Roman Svychkar, revealed details of the preparation and shared his emotions about the victory in an exclusive interview with Champion Radio.
The Formula for Success: Acclimatization and New Roster
According to Svychkar, the key factor in their success was the preparation strategy. The team held a high-quality training camp directly in Hong Kong, which allowed the athletes to acclimatize properly and manage their energy levels correctly for the decisive bouts.
"It is very pleasing that with our new roster, we were able to achieve medals at both the European and World Championships. There is hope for Olympic qualification. We completed our training camp, acclimatized, and managed our condition correctly. And we performed a small miracle," noted the fencer.
This result was particularly valuable as the team won the silver medal in the team event for the first time in seven years.
Leadership Relay and Coaching Work
Roman Svychkar admitted that in critical moments on the strip, he relied on the experience gained competing alongside the legendary Bohdan Nykyshyn. He tried to adopt his manner of behavior and decision-making during the crucial seconds of a match.
The fencer highly praised the effectiveness of the current training system. Experienced coaches Igor Reizlin and Bohdan Nykyshyn work with both the men's and women's teams, allowing them to bring out the strengths of each member of the quartet.
The athlete placed special emphasis on the progress of his teammate, Mykhailo Krasniuk. In just a few months, he made an impressive leap: back in May, Krasniuk was a Master of Sports, but after the triumph in Hong Kong, he met the requirements for the title of Merited Master of Sports of Ukraine.
Global Support and Political Context
In the interview, Svychkar also touched upon the topic of the return of representatives from the aggressor country to international competitions. He noted that most foreign athletes are saddened by such decisions and openly support the Ukrainian team.
Particular resonance was caused by the victory of Ukrainian fencer Alina Komashchuk in a bout against the Russian team. The video of this confrontation is actively spreading on social media, generating a wave of support.
"Right now, this video is spreading all over Instagram, which is very pleasing. Many athletes said they were rooting for Ukraine against the aggressors," concluded the Ukrainian fencer.
