The global gaming community continues to react strongly to the plans of the Japanese giant. A month ago, Sony announced its decision to cease production of physical discs for PlayStation games starting in January 2028. This statement sparked a wave of criticism, but now the company has officially commented on the situation for the first time.
Explosion of emotions and petitions
The announcement of the transition to a purely digital sales model was a real blow for collectors and lovers of physical media. Gamers have massively turned against Sony: social media filled with biting comments, and a petition was launched on Change.org demanding the cancellation of the decision. In a short time, the document gathered more than 352,000 signatures. Part of the community even called for a boycott of the platform as a sign of protest.
Official position: course unchanged
As part of the first-quarter report for the 2027 fiscal year, Sony's CFO Lin Tao commented on the fans' reaction. She acknowledged that the company received many opinions and understands the players' emotions, but emphasized that the wave of negativity will not force the platform to change its development vector.
"People have strong convictions, we understand them and want to take them into account," Tao said. "Nevertheless, we will continue to carefully follow the plan to phase out discs."
Digits against physics
The main argument in favor of abandoning optical media is the overall digitization of content. According to Lin Tao, this process affects not only the video game industry but all areas of media. Sales statistics confirm the trend: in the last quarter, 82% of games sold by Sony were digital. For comparison, a year ago this figure was 1% higher.
The situation is even more obvious if you look at partner data. For example, for Japanese publisher Capcom, the share of digital sales reaches 93.3%. It is expected that projects such as Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will become one of the last major games released on physical media.
