On the night of Sunday, August 9, 2026, an event occurred in the Zhytomyr region that could have far-reaching consequences for the regional economy and global supply chains. As a result of a night attack that lasted almost seven hours, the Kromberg & Schubert plant in Oliivka village suffered serious damage. The enterprise, which has been operating in the region since 2015, specializes in the production of electrical on-board cable systems and automotive wiring harnesses for leading global automakers.
According to the Zhytomyr Regional Military Administration (RMA), a powerful fire broke out on the factory grounds as a result of a direct hit by strike drones and the fall of debris. The sky over the city was shrouded in thick smoke, which is confirmed by visual evidence from witnesses. Company management confirmed that production capacities and critical infrastructure suffered extensive destruction, forcing the suspension of the enterprise's operations for an indefinite period.
No casualties among staff
Despite the scale of the destruction, plant management and local authorities report that there are no casualties among employees. At the time of the strike, people were in an equipped shelter, access to which was personally checked by city services the day before. This was made possible by strict adherence to safety rules and regular inspections of protective structures.
However, it is worth noting that three civilians were injured in the Zhytomyr district itself due to the night attack on the residential sector. This highlights the complexity of the situation and the need to strengthen protection measures for both industrial facilities and residential areas.
Economic consequences for the automotive industry
The shutdown of the Kromberg & Schubert plant is a colossal blow not only to the economy of the Zhytomyr region but also to the global automotive industry. The plant is one of the largest taxpayers and employers in the region, providing jobs for about 3,500 employees. The Head of the RMA, Vitaliy Bunechko, has already stated that the authorities are urgently looking for ways to help the strategic investor to preserve production.
Automotive wiring harnesses and on-board wiring are the "nervous system" of a car, created for specific models. Due to the specifics of logistics, car manufacturers work on a Just-in-Time principle (deliveries directly to the assembly line without creating huge warehouses). The sudden shutdown of the Zhytomyr plant could provoke delays on the assembly lines of Volkswagen, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz in Germany, as has already happened in the spring of 2022.
