Suicide drone at Antonov: how the terror attack at Leipzig Airport was prevented and why the investigation versions diverge

In the night of August 5, 2026, an incident occurred at Leipzig/Halle Airport, which German authorities described as a "new level of danger" and a scenario of hybrid threat. A drone equipped with explosives was discovered in the immediate vicinity of a giant Ukrainian Antonov An-124 cargo aircraft parked on the apron. The situation led to a complete suspension of air traffic and the deployment of a large-scale special operation.

Semtex and a faulty detonator

An employee of PortGround GmbH, the company servicing the apron, discovered a suspicious object on Tuesday around 23:42. The drone lay just a few meters from the fuselage of the strategic cargo plane. Upon inspection, it was found that a package of explosives was attached to the drone's body. According to data obtained by the publication WELT, laboratory tests confirmed that the substance was Semtex plastic explosive, developed in Czechoslovakia back in the 1960s. This substance is traditionally used for military purposes and demolition work.

Federal police officers classified the find as a possible improvised explosive device (IED). Fortunately, the drone did not detonate. According to security agencies, the cause was a technical malfunction of the detonator, which was subsequently removed by the bomb disposal unit. Had the explosive device detonated, the consequences for one of Europe's largest cargo terminals could have been catastrophic.

Contradictory data

The question of exactly how the drone ended up on the ground is a subject of dispute and has two main versions. According to one, documented by the police, a low-flying drone was shot down by the driver of a tour bus, who was conducting a tour of the airport at that moment. According to this version, the driver accidentally or instinctively destroyed the drone when it flew too low.

However, there is an alternative version of events. According to it, the bus driver did not shoot down the drone but found it already lying on its side and, presumably, knocked it over or rolled it. The difference in these versions is critical for understanding the attack tactics: was the drone aimed at a specific point and flying at the moment of discovery, or was it already shot down or crashed before that. Furthermore, German media, citing a police report, stated that the drone might have collided with another drone in the air, which also adds uncertainty to the picture of what happened.

The myth of ammunition and the real threat

An information storm quickly erupted around the incident. German media spread information that the An-124 aircraft was allegedly transporting ammunition, which would have made the attack an attempt to destroy a strategic cargo. However, the airport operator and the Antonov airline categorically refuted these rumors, stating that the aircraft was empty at the time of the incident.

Nevertheless, the very fact of an attack on an aircraft that regularly bases in Leipzig has huge political significance. German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt called the incident a "scenario of hybrid threat." Leipzig/Halle Airport is a key hub for logistics, and an attack on it demonstrates the readiness of hostile forces to use civilian infrastructure as a target.
