The Odesa Regional Military Administration (RMA) has published updated information regarding the situation surrounding the vessel Golden Leo, which sank in the Black Sea following a Russian attack. The incident occurred on July 26, and since then, relevant services have maintained continuous monitoring of the sea area.

Situation at sea: monitoring data

As of July 29, 2026, official data indicates the absence of signs of seawater contamination by oil products in the area where the vessel sank. This was reported by the head of the Odesa RMA, Oleksandr Kiper, in his Telegram channel.

The location of the sunken object was precisely determined thanks to the analysis of satellite imagery. Currently, specialists note that the threat of an ecological catastrophe has not yet materialized; however, monitoring of the situation continues on a constant basis.

Response mechanism and control

By decision of an extraordinary meeting of the commission on issues of technogenic and ecological safety and emergency situations, a complex of measures to prevent possible consequences has been deployed in the region:

  • Continuous monitoring of the Black Sea area is conducted by the Odesa RMA, the Administration of Sea Ports of Ukraine, and the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in the Odesa region.
  • A mechanism for the rapid mobilization of resources, including specialized equipment and sorbents, has been established in case of necessity.
  • At present, there are no official grounds for introducing restrictions on swimming in the area of the incident.

Expert opinion and risks

Ecologists previously warned about the potential threat of Black Sea contamination. Viktor Komorin, an ecologist at the Ukrainian Scientific Center for Marine Ecology, noted that the primary danger is posed by the fuel and lubricants that were on board.

According to the specialist's assessment, the cargo of corn transported by the vessel should not significantly affect the state of the marine environment. However, experts warn that the leakage of oil products may not occur instantaneously but gradually; therefore, the analysis of satellite data is necessary to forecast the spread of oil slicks under the influence of wind and waves.

Logistical consequences

The incident with the Golden Leo occurred against the backdrop of a temporary halt in shipping in Ukrainian seaports due to Russian attacks. In this regard, Ukraine, the European Commission, Romania, and Moldova are actively discussing the expansion of alternative export routes through the Danube ports. The parties are considering measures aimed at maintaining the supply of Ukrainian products and minimizing the impact of logistical restrictions.
