Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has issued a sharp statement regarding the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which obligated the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to return Russian national teams to international competition. According to the head of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, admitting Russian hockey players to tournaments will become 'the legitimation of Russia's aggression' and 'will stain sports with the blood of Ukrainians.' He wrote this on his social media page on X, as reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Legitimation of aggression through sport
Sybiha stressed that Russia has not stopped the war against Ukraine, continues to kill people, and attacks Ukrainian cities daily. Under these conditions, he stated, granting permission for the return of national teams will provide Moscow with precisely the international legitimacy it seeks to obtain. 'By allowing the return of Russian hockey, CAS will stain the ice with Ukrainian blood,' the minister stated, urging that the decision be immediately revoked.
Context: CAS decision and its consequences
The decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which obliged the IIHF to return Russian teams to the competition calendar, has already caused a wave of indignation in the international sports community. For Ukraine, the return of the aggressor country to international arenas means, in Sybiha's assessment, a lack of clear consequences for the war in a sphere traditionally positioned as a space outside of politics. The minister emphasized that 'there can be no normal life while aggression continues,' and the war must have concrete consequences, including in international sport.
Partner reaction: Germany and Ukraine
The German Ice Hockey Federation reacted harshly to Russia's admission and publicly stood in defense of the Ukrainian national team, noting that Russia's return poses a threat to the holding of the upcoming World Championship. For its part, the Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine urgently initiated negotiations with the IIHF and distributed a protest note detailing its position regarding a potential boycott of the World Championship should the aggressor country return.
Call to the international community
Sybiha appealed to the international sports community and Ukraine's partners to take a firm stance against the re-admission of Russia to competitions. Separately, the diplomat appealed to governments that 'have retained their moral compass' with a demand to ban Russian players from entering their territory. In his opinion, this will become one of the concrete and visible consequences that aggression must bear and will help preserve the sports sphere as a tool rather than a platform for normalizing Russia's standing.
