Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated in a recent interview about the urgent need to radically intensify sanctions pressure on the Russian Federation. According to him, current restrictions require immediate review, as Moscow finds new ways to circumvent existing bans and continue funding its military campaign. Kyiv insists that Western partners utilize all available potential, linking new sanction packages to the real situation on the frontline and the state of the Russian economy.
Technological Vulnerability and Western Components in Russian Weapons
The head of the Ukrainian foreign policy department drew special attention to the problem of supplying critical foreign components used for arms production. As a clear example, Sybiha cited details of a missile used during the recent attack on Pryluky, among which Western-made elements were discovered. These facts have already been presented to the UK Foreign Secretary during his official visit to Kyiv. According to the Ukrainian side, about 90% of modern Russian military equipment and weapons contain components manufactured in Western countries, which requires an immediate halt to their supply channels.
Contradictory Data
The situation surrounding sanction lists has sparked serious debate in the international arena. In late September, the European Union decided to extend restrictive measures against Russia, but unexpectedly excluded prominent businessmen Alisher Usmanov and Mikhail Fridman, drawing sharp criticism from Kyiv, which called this step erroneous and demanded the oligarchs be returned to the list. At the same time, the British side officially denied reports that London had lifted or planned to lift sanctions against these individuals. Additional tension was created by US President Donald Trump's recent statement on October 9 regarding an agreement to supply Russian diesel fuel to the global market through a temporary license issued by the US Treasury Department.
Kyiv's Plans and the Reaction of International Partners
In response to the removal of certain individuals from sanctions, Ukraine has prepared a new package of restrictions including ten more Russian oligarchs. Andrii Sybiha intends to raise this issue for discussion at the upcoming EU Foreign Ministers meeting in Luxembourg. Kyiv emphasizes that any attempts at appeasement or compromise with Moscow lead only to a dead end, while harsh and uncompromising economic measures can genuinely limit the aggressor's military-industrial potential.
