Users around the world have encountered an inability to open short Telegram links. When attempting to access an address starting with t.me, browsers display an error. The issue is global and not limited to a single country.

Reason for the outage: blockage by Montenegro

According to monitoring resources that track the operation of social networks and reports from RBC-Ukraine, the cause lies in the actions of Montenegro's domain name registry. This body manages the .me domain zone. Preliminary data suggests that the registry blocked the t.me domain, rendering short links non-functional in web browsers.

What works and what doesn't

It is important to understand the scale of the incident: the problem affected exclusively the web versions of the messenger and link transitions via browsers. The Telegram service itself continues to function normally.

Users can use without issues:

  • Telegram mobile applications on iOS and Android;
  • The desktop version of the program for computers.

The blockage only affected the web resource tied to Montenegro's domain zone.

Context: discussion on blocking in Ukraine

The domain outage occurred against the backdrop of ongoing discussions regarding the expediency of blocking the messenger in Ukraine. Previously, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Ihor Klymenko, and the Head of the President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov, expressed support for restricting the platform's operation, although they did not propose a complete ban.

Deputy Head of the National Police, Andriy Nebitov, noted that a complete blockage of Telegram would not definitively solve the problem of recruiting citizens by hostile intelligence services. According to him, such a step would only have a temporary effect, considering that 82% of uncovered terrorist acts were committed by individuals recruited through this messenger.

User opinion

Despite the arguments from law enforcement officials, public opinion remains skeptical regarding a total ban. According to survey data, more than 75% of Ukrainians do not support the idea of blocking Telegram. At the same time, the majority of citizens advocate for strengthening control over the platform's operation.
