In the Cahul district of Moldova, near the village of Velencă, local residents discovered a dangerous object, which was subsequently identified as fragments of a Russian attack drone. The incident occurred on August 5, when the police were called to the scene.
According to official law enforcement data, explosives and technical experts confirmed that the debris belonged to a 'Geran-2' type drone. This type of unmanned aerial vehicle, also known as 'Shahed', is used by the Russian army to strike targets at long distances. The find was made in a rural area, among dry vegetation, where traces of an explosion or the device's crash were visible.
Investigation of the incident circumstances
Currently, police officers are conducting a detailed investigation to establish all the circumstances of the drone's appearance in this area. Experts are examining the debris to understand exactly how the device ended up on Moldovan territory and why it was destroyed or malfunctioned. Photos of the discovery site show characteristic details of the fuselage, allowing for the unambiguous identification of the equipment's origin.
Escalation of drone incidents
This is not the first case of Russian equipment being found on the country's territory this year. According to local media, in March, a drone was also found in the village of Tudora in southern Moldova, which, according to authorities, was carrying explosives. Another incident occurred in February, when an unknown drone was discovered in a border region.
Furthermore, in January, a Russian drone was found near the border, which allegedly flew into Moldova during an attack on the Odesa region of Ukraine. That drone was also armed with a warhead. Thus, the find in the village of Velencă became the third case of discovering such devices since the beginning of the year, causing concern among local authorities and the population.
