Early in the morning of July 28, the city of Zaporizhzhia became the target of a large-scale attack by the Russian armed forces. As a result of the use of guided aerial bombs and attack drones, people were killed and civilian facilities were damaged. According to Ivan Fedorov, Head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, people may still be trapped under the rubble of destroyed buildings, and search and rescue operations are underway.
Attack timeline and initial consequences
At 04:40, an air raid alarm was sounded in the region. Operational services warned residents of the probable use of guided aerial bombs (KABs) by the enemy. Just 30 minutes later, reports of the first destruction emerged. A Russian drone struck an apartment in a multi-story residential building. As a result of the incident, a 53-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man sustained injuries.
Strike on private sector and casualties
At another address in the regional center, a guided aerial bomb fell. It completely destroyed a private residential house. A 67-year-old man died under the rubble. Rescue services continue to work at the scene of the tragedy, checking the debris for other victims. The National Police of Ukraine confirmed the death of the 67-year-old resident and reported the extraction of a 22-year-old wounded person from under the rubble.
Emergency services response
Law enforcement and rescue forces have been deployed to the strike sites. Paramedics, investigative and operational groups, forensic experts, and bomb disposal technicians are working at the locations. Patrol police officers are ensuring cordons and security in the work zones. Photos of the aftermath of the attack have been published in the official Telegram channels of Ivan Fedorov and the National Police of Ukraine.
Context of escalation
The attack on Zaporizhzhia was part of a series of strikes on civilian facilities in Ukraine over the last 24 hours. On the night of July 27, Russian forces dropped KABs on the Sumy region, where people were also injured. The day before, on July 26, a drone struck an ATB supermarket in Chernihiv, with children among the injured. That same morning, an attack drone hit the Epicenter hypermarket in Kryvyi Rih, with fire engulfing more than 16,000 square meters of the building.
