On August 6, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU) celebrates one of the most important Christian holidays — the Transfiguration of the Lord. In folk tradition, this day is also known as the Apple Savior, which is associated with the ancient custom of consecrating the first fruits of the harvest, especially apples.
Theological significance of the holiday
According to the OCU press service, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord is dedicated to an event that took place shortly before the crucifixion of Jesus Christ — in the last year of His three-year preaching, when He was 33 years old. On Mount Tabor, Christ was transfigured before three chosen disciples — the apostles Peter, James, and John, revealing His Divine glory to them.
“The face of Jesus Christ and His clothes shone with Divine uncreated light,” the OCU explains. This event confirmed that Christ is not only the Son of Man, but also the Son of God, the promised Messiah and Savior of the world.
The Church emphasizes that the Transfiguration had a deep pastoral meaning: it was meant to strengthen the faith of the apostles in the face of the impending suffering and death of Christ. “In that future time of the humiliation of the Son of God, when the victory of evil will seem obvious and insurmountable, the disciples must remember what they witnessed,” the OCU statement says.
Traditions and folk customs
In folk tradition, the day of the Transfiguration of the Lord received the name “Apple Savior” due to the practice of consecrating the first ripe fruits — apples, honey, flowers, and herbs — in churches. According to the OCU, this custom was adopted together with the baptism and liturgical rule of the Constantinople Mother Church.
However, the OCU press service reminds: “Savior is our Savior Jesus Christ — One, and cannot be ‘first’, ‘second’ or ‘third’. And even more so cannot be ‘honey’, ‘apple’ or ‘nut’.” In the opinion of the Church, folk names should not replace the real names of church holidays and displace their main content — the celebration of the Lord Jesus Christ.

On the day of the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord, the head of the OCU — His Beatitude Metropolitan Epiphany — leads the Divine Liturgy in the Stavropigial Savior-Transfiguration Cathedral in Kyiv (on Teremky). Believers who cannot physically be present in the church can follow the liturgy online.
Contradictory data
Although the OCU officially emphasizes that “Savior” is the name of Jesus Christ and not the name of the holiday, the term “Apple Savior” is widely used in folk tradition and the media. Some sources, including RBK-Ukraine and Nashе Місто, use both names in parallel, without going into theological clarifications. This creates a certain confusion: on the one hand, the Church insists on the correct name of the holiday, on the other — folk tradition and the media continue to use the established household name.
Significance for the modern Christian
The Transfiguration of the Lord, according to the OCU, is not only a historical event, but also a reminder of the path of every Christian. “Our nature, created by God, is called not to spiritual darkness, but to sanctification and renewal. God’s grace is able to transform human life if we open our hearts to it,” the statement says.
Thus, the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord serves as a reminder that through faith and grace, every person can be transformed and draw closer to God.
