On the morning of July 14, a court session began in Kyiv that will determine the fate of one of the most high-profile war crimes in the history of modern Ukraine. The judge is considering a motion to select a preventive measure for Stanislav Luchanov — the former commander of the 155th Separate Mechanized Brigade. He is accused of kidnapping and the intentional murder of two civilians in the Kyiv region.
Chronology of the tragedy: from a domestic dispute to a double murder
The investigation has established a shocking picture of events that took place on the night of June 27 to 28. A group of seven people, led by Luchanov, broke into the yard of a house in the village of Kalynivka. There, they forcibly took two brothers and drove them away in an unknown direction. The bodies of the victims were subsequently discovered in a forest belt in the Poltava region.
The investigation's version indicates that the motive for the crime was revenge. According to law enforcement data, the incident flared up due to a domestic dispute with the ex-commander's wife. Instead of resolving the conflict in a civilized manner, Luchanov organized an armed raid against civilians.
Escape and arrest: how the commander was caught
After committing the crime, Luchanov attempted to flee. On July 11, it became known that the commander had left his place of service without permission. The Armed Forces of Ukraine immediately issued a wanted notice for him, and nine of his subordinates were suspended from their duties on suspicion of involvement in the disappearance of the brothers.
However, the escape was short-lived. On July 13, after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly promised to establish the full truth in the case, Luchanov was detained in Kyiv. The Armed Forces of Ukraine command firmly stated that ranks would not serve as an indulgence: there would be no leniency for criminals.
Threat of life imprisonment
Stanislav Luchanov has been charged with unlawful deprivation of liberty and the intentional murder of two people. According to Ukrainian legislation, under these articles, he faces a penalty of imprisonment for a term of up to 15 years or life imprisonment. The court, which began on July 14, must decide whether he will be held in custody until the end of the investigation and trial.
