Ukrainian company Fire Point has announced specific timelines for the implementation of the Freyja air defense system project. The company's CEO, Irina Terekh, stated that the first successful interception of a ballistic missile is scheduled for mid-2027.

Technological leap and European partners

The system is being developed on a tight schedule. According to the head of Fire Point, the company is attempting to implement a program that typically takes decades in global practice within just a few years. To date, at least five tests of the interceptor missile have been conducted.

The project has received broad international support. Thirteen European industrial partners have already joined the initiative, and key agreements have been virtually finalized. Leading defense contractors are involved in the creation of the complex:

  • Norwegian company Kongsberg is responsible for developing the system's command center.
  • German Diehl Defence has confirmed negotiations regarding the supply of guidance systems.

Fire Point is integrating its own FP7.X interceptor with guidance systems and radar stations supplied by European partners.

Assembly stages and system architecture

Currently, the project is in an intensive and complex stage of final assembly of all components. Engineers are working on integrating surveillance radar stations, tracking radar stations, and seeker heads.

A key feature of Freyja is its open architecture. This will allow individual components from different manufacturers to be replaced if necessary without changing the entire system, ensuring flexibility and independence from a single supplier.

Economic efficiency

One of the key advantages of the new complex is its cost. Fire Point estimates that the price of one interceptor will not exceed 1 million euros. For comparison, this is approximately one-quarter to one-sixth of the cost of a missile for the American Patriot complex.

Political context and risks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy previously named the development of the Freyja project as one of the priorities for Ukrainian diplomats. In his opinion, the system could become a common anti-ballistic platform for Europe.

However, Zelenskyy also warned about the risks. He noted that Russia would try to hinder the implementation of the project and use various methods to delay the unification of partners.
