Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced a worrying trend in military aid: the volume of air defense (AD) missile supplies is critically decreasing. According to the head of state, the official reason stated by partners — the US and European countries — is their involvement in the conflict in the Middle East. However, Kyiv suspects the existence of hidden political motives.
Official reasons and hidden motives
In his address, Zelensky emphasized that the shortage of ammunition is confirmed by the Commander of the Air Force, Anatoliy Krivonosyuk. Partners explain the situation by the fact that their resources have been redirected to solve tasks in the Middle East region. Nevertheless, the President of Ukraine does not rule out that this is only part of the picture.
"I don't know if there are other reasons besides the Middle East. Perhaps these are political steps to make Ukraine more compliant. In my opinion, it's not without this, and we understand that this is a serious challenge," Zelensky stated.
According to data provided by the President, compared to last year, supplies of missiles for air defense systems have decreased threefold. At the same time, Kyiv notes that Western allies still possess the necessary resources to provide Ukraine with protection.
Escalation of air terror
The reduction in aid is happening against the backdrop of escalating aggression. The Russian Federation has intensified air attacks on Ukrainian cities. As a result of one of the night attacks, at least 17 people were killed and 44 were injured.
Commenting on the tragic consequences of the shelling, Volodymyr Zelensky urged partners not to delay the provision of ballistic missile interceptors. The President emphasized that every delay in delivering weapons costs Ukrainians their lives.
Development of domestic production
In conditions of constant shortage and monthly reduction in supply volumes, Ukraine is forced to seek alternative ways to ensure security. A critically important direction is the development and implementation of a domestic air defense system.
Zelensky noted that creating own means of protection is a strategically correct step. This is necessary not only for survival in current combat conditions but also for ensuring the country's security in the post-war period. Ukraine managed to overcome a difficult winter, but now it faces the need to accelerate the creation of an independent defense system to cover the gap in Western aid.
