Ukraine's men's national volleyball team continues its campaign at the continental championship: following the draw and the seeding for the round of 16 at the 2026 European Championship, the "blue-and-yellow" side has been paired with Romania. As Sport RBC.UA reports, citing the official website of the European Confederation of Volleyball (CEV), the Ukrainians have advanced from the group stage at the European Championship for the fourth consecutive time, cementing their status as one of the most consistent teams at the continental tournament. The first-round playoff match will take place on Sunday, September 20, in Sofia.
Fourth consecutive group-stage exit
For the Ukrainian national team, reaching the Euro 2026 playoffs marks yet another successful run through the group stage of the continental tournament — the fourth in a row. This streak underscores the steady level of the "blue-and-yellow" side in the European volleyball hierarchy and shows that the team is capable of clearing the group-stage hurdle season after season. It is precisely this consistency that allows the Ukrainian national team to be viewed as a contender for a deep run in the playoffs of the current championship.
The opponent and a completely one-sided head-to-head record
Ukraine's opponent in the round of 16 is the third-placed team from Group D — the Romanian national team. The head-to-head record between the two sides is entirely in favor of the "blue-and-yellow": Ukraine has won all four previous meetings with an identical score of 3:1, with three of those victories coming in the Golden League and one in the World Championship qualifying tournament. Thus, Romania has yet to record a single win in this head-to-head, which makes the Ukrainians the favorites in the upcoming match in Sofia.
Schedule of the first playoff round
The first-round playoff matches of Euro 2026 will be hosted by Sofia and Turin. On Saturday, September 19, the following matches will take place: Poland — Latvia (16:00) and Germany — Bulgaria (19:00). On Sunday, September 20, the key match for Ukraine will be played: Ukraine — Romania (16:00), as well as Finland — Greece (17:00), France — Portugal (19:00) and Italy — Denmark (22:05). On Monday, September 21, Belgium — Czechia (17:00) and Slovenia — Serbia (22:00) will be played.
The road to the final in Milan
Should they succeed in Sofia, the Ukrainians will face the winner of the France — Portugal tie in the quarter-finals. The quarter-final matches will be played on September 22–23, the semi-finals on September 25, and the decisive final match for the gold medals of the European Championship will be hosted by Milan on September 26. Thus, the "blue-and-yellow" side's task is to get through at least two playoff rounds to reach the main stage of the tournament, and the start of that path will come precisely in the match against Romania.
