Ukrainian military forces have reported a new successful interception of a Russian strike-reconnaissance unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) known as the 'Orion'. The incident occurred during combat operations, where air defense forces demonstrated their ability to neutralize a complex aerial threat.
Interception Details
Information about the incident was disseminated by RBK-Ukraine, citing an official statement from the 115th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, known by the callsign 'Aliens' (Prisheltsy). According to the unit, the Russian drone was shot down by a Ukrainian interceptor drone.
The brigade's statement emphasizes the difficulty of the task: 'It is not easy to shoot down. But the pilots of the 115th OMB 'Aliens' tracked, caught up with, and destroyed the enemy 'bird''. This is not the first such case: the fighters clarified that this is the second time an 'Orion' has been shot down specifically using an interceptor drone.
Features of the Russian UAV
The 'Orion' is classified as a rare and expensive apparatus, with a cost estimated at $5 million. The main danger of this unmanned vehicle lies in its strike potential. It is capable of carrying aerial bombs and cruise missiles of the 'Bandrol' type on board, which, according to the Ukrainian side, are used to attack cities.
Russia is currently scaling up the production of 'Bandrol' cruise missiles, integrating them with the 'Orion' platform to conduct high-precision strikes.
Context and Previous Incidents
The fight against this type of unmanned vehicle has been waged by the Ukrainian side for a long time. Previously, in September 2025, the Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert 'Madjar' Brovdi, reported the downing of a Russian strike-reconnaissance 'Orion' aircraft.
In addition, during counter-intelligence and sabotage operations, Ukrainian forces have struck enemy infrastructure. Thus, on April 2, the Armed Forces of Ukraine struck a warehouse in Crimea where rare Russian 'Orion' drones were stored. During the same attack, an An-72P aircraft and a radar station (Radar) were damaged.
