The Ice Hockey Federation of Ukraine has officially announced the composition of the national team's coaching staff, led by Oleksandr Bobkin. According to the federation's press service, reported to Sport RBC.UA, the team of specialists consists of five people: in addition to the head coach, the staff includes four assistants, each responsible for a specific area of team preparation. The appointments were made against the background of the national team's preparation for participation in the European Nations Cup of the 2026/27 season, the application for which was formed on the eve of the announcement of the coaching staff.
First assistants: Communication, defense, and penalty killing
Ruslan Borisenko has been appointed as the first assistant head coach, and Denys Isaenko as the second. Both specialists received an expanded range of duties extending beyond standard "on-ice assistance." Their tasks include direct communication with players, working with defensemen, preparing tactical penalty-killing schemes, and participating in on-ice training sessions. Thus, defensive organization and discipline in special situations have been singled out as a separate area of responsibility, indicating the priority of these elements in Bobkin's methodological concept.
Video preparation and opponent analysis: Continuity from the 2022/23 season
Dmytro Kobylnyk has taken on the function of video preparation and opponent analysis. Notably, he has already been working in Bobkin's coaching staff since the 2022/23 season, making his appointment a logical continuation of established interaction. Kobylnyk will be responsible for collecting and analyzing game episodes, preparing analytical materials on opponents, and integrating video data into the training process. The presence of a permanent analyst familiar with the head coach's methodology over several seasons reduces the risks of organizational failures at the start of the new cycle.
Goaltending and physical preparation: Two key areas
Oleksandr Fedorov has been appointed as the goaltending coach. His duties include forming the pool of goaltenders, their individual training, and direct work during team training sessions. Physical preparation will be a separate area: Oleh Zadoenko, who will continue working with the national team, will be responsible for it. Zadoenko will focus on developing the physical qualities of the hockey players and will conduct training work both on and off the ice. The combination of these two positions covers issues related to the preparation of the goaltending line and the overall physical condition of the players, which is especially important given the dense calendar of international tournaments.
Context: Application for the European Nations Cup and the elite division issue
The announcement of the coaching staff coincided with another important event: the day before, the coaching collective determined the roster for the European Nations Cup of the 2026/27 season. New head coach Oleksandr Bobkin has called up 25 players who will begin preparations for the tournament. Simultaneously, the hockey community is discussing the possible exclusion of the Ukrainian national team from the elite division in favor of Russia, which adds context to the federation's current personnel decisions. Forming a complete staff of five specialists can be viewed as a step toward systematic preparation of the team for upcoming international starts and building a long-term coaching strategy.
