The use of onboard artillery by manned jet fighters to intercept and destroy cruise missiles is a unique and rare achievement in modern combat conditions. According to the latest reports from specialized analytical publications, a French-made Mirage 2000-5F fighter in service with the Ukrainian Air Force has successfully shot down a Russian small-caliber cruise missile S-8000 'Banderol' for the first time in history, using its standard built-in cannon system.

Background and supply of French fighters

According to a detailed report by the French independent organization 'Aid to Europe', official Paris transferred a modern batch of Mirage 2000-5F fighters to Ukraine, directly withdrawing them from the active inventory of the French Air and Space Force during 2025. These light multirole aircraft underwent the necessary adaptations for integration into the Ukrainian air defense system. The short-range offensive armament of this French fighter consists of two powerful 30mm DEFA 554 automatic cannons rigidly mounted within the aircraft's fuselage.

Technical features of the cannon armament

Each of the two installed DEFA 554 automatic cannons on the Mirage 2000-5F combat aircraft is equipped with a limited ammunition load of 125 high-explosive armor-piercing incendiary rounds of 30x113 mm caliber. With an incredible rate of fire reaching 1,800 rounds per minute, the initial velocity of the ammunition is approximately 815 meters per second. It was precisely this close-combat weapon that allowed the Ukrainian pilot to execute an unprecedented aerial interception, approaching a small-sized aerial target at a dangerous distance.

Characteristics of the Banderol missile

Meanwhile, the Russian company Kronstadt has developed and introduced a modern hybrid design—the S-8000 'Banderol' cruise missile, combining elements of a loitering munition and a drone. The maximum speed of this aircraft reaches 620-650 km/h, while its standard cruising speed is maintained at 520-560 km/h. The missile's propulsion system is based on a compact Chinese-made Swiwin turbojet engine weighing just 8.5 kg, which delivers up to 81.6 kgf of thrust at 65,000 rpm, providing a flight range of up to 500 km with the OFBCh-150 warhead weighing 114.3 kg.

Contradictory data

While Ukrainian and Western sources report the classic use of the fighter's built-in cannon against the latest Russian cruise missile or loitering munition, Russian developers position the S-8000 'Banderol' as a hybrid system with drone-like characteristics. Furthermore, reports show certain discrepancies regarding the exact classification of the target: some publications refer to it as a cruise missile, while other experts insist on the definition of 'loitering munition' due to the specifics of its propulsion system and cruising speed.
