The press service of Ukrzaliznytsia has commented on the mechanism of forming railway ticket prices in the company's mobile application, explaining why the final amount may differ from the one displayed at the search stage. The clarification came in response to a public complaint by a female passenger posted on the Threads social network and was reported by RBC-Ukraine.
Passenger's Complaint: Three Different Prices for One Route
The reason for the explanation was a post by a woman who, when buying a train ticket for the Odesa — Kharkiv route, noticed a discrepancy in the cost. According to her, at the search stage, the Ukrzaliznytsia app showed a price of 1,199 hryvnias for a Luxury class carriage seat and 633 hryvnias for a compartment. However, after proceeding to the screen for selecting a specific seat, the amount changed to 923 hryvnias. The passenger published interface screenshots and asked to explain why the price changes directly during the ticket booking process.
How the Price Display Algorithm Works
Ukrzaliznytsia explained that at the ticket search stage, the application defaults to showing the minimum available cost for the selected route. This value is indicative and does not reserve a specific seat. The final price is calculated only after the passenger selects a carriage and a specific seat. That is why the amount displayed at the final checkout stage may either exceed or match the initial value.
Factors Influencing the Final Cost
According to the press service's clarification, several parameters simultaneously affect the ticket price: the class of the carriage (economy, compartment, luxury), the specific seat in the train, the day of the week, the calendar period of the trip, and the train's brand coefficient. The combination of these factors means that two tickets for the same route, but for different dates or in different carriages, can differ significantly in cost. In particular, on peak days — for example, Sunday — the ticket price may be higher than on weekdays.
Context: Ukrzaliznytsia's Pricing Policy in 2026
The clarification on dynamic pricing came amid an ongoing discussion about the cost of rail transport in Ukraine. In the summer of 2026, Ukrzaliznytsia already reported on plans to adjust ticket prices and on the components that form their cost. In addition, on October 20, 2026, the company announced the cancellation of several trains in the western direction, which further highlights the issue of transparency in tariff policy for passengers.
Thus, the price change after seat selection in the Ukrzaliznytsia app is not an error or a hidden markup, but reflects the operation of a multi-factor pricing algorithm, in which the minimum price at the search stage serves only as a starting point for calculation.
