Ukrzaliznytsia has systematized the rules for transporting passengers with children on both domestic and international routes. The key principle the carrier brings to the forefront is that a child's age and the direction of travel determine whether a separate seat will be provided, whether a discount applies, and whether the child may cross the border unaccompanied. These parameters differ not only within Ukraine but also depending on the destination country, which makes checking the current conditions before purchasing a ticket essential.
Free travel without a separate seat: age thresholds by country
Children may travel without a separate seat being provided, accompanied by an adult, but the maximum age for such free travel depends on the route. In Ukraine, Slovakia, Austria and Hungary, children under 5 travel free without a seat; in the direction of Moldova — under 4; and to Poland — under 3. Thus, there is no single "pan-European" threshold, and parents planning transit or direct trips need to check the child's age against the specific destination rather than an average rule.
Discounts for older children and fare structure
For children above the free category, a flexible discount system applies, which depending on the direction can range from 25% to 64% when purchasing a separate seat. It is important to understand what makes up the final price of the travel document: it is formed from the cost of the ticket (KV), the cost of the couchette (VL), the commission fee (KZB) and the tax. The discount is applied to the corresponding components of the fare, so the actual savings when buying a seat for an older child depend on the structure of the specific ticket and the chosen route.
Independent trips and border crossing
Within Ukraine, children have the right to board a train and travel independently from the age of 14. When crossing the state border, the rules vary depending on the country, the child's age and the presence of accompanying persons. The carrier recommends checking the current requirements on the website of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine before travel, as border conditions may change and be supplemented depending on the direction and the applicable regulations.
Student benefits: what is not provided
Separately, Ukrzaliznytsia emphasizes that preferential travel for students and pupils is not provided for by law on international routes. The exception covers only a narrow case: if a student is traveling on a train formed by foreign railways through the territory of Ukraine, the discount is granted exclusively on the cost of the ticket, while the cost of the couchette is paid on general terms. This means that the familiar student fares, which apply on domestic routes in a number of countries, are not automatically carried over to international trips.
Rolling stock modernization and the "Art Train"
Against the backdrop of clarifying passenger rules, the carrier continues to expand and modernize its rolling stock. The company has signed a contract for the supply of 10 new-generation carriages with a wider "T gauge," which will allow the sleeping berths to be significantly lengthened. To ensure comfort during peak periods, additional new carriages have been put into service, making trips with small children abroad more convenient, including during long stops at the border. In parallel, Ukrzaliznytsia is implementing cultural projects on the international stage: the Ukrainian "Art Train" has begun a tour of Europe, making its first departure from Moldova, where the sleeping berths have been turned into an art space with an exhibition on war and life.
