The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) has officially confirmed the deaths of two American soldiers following recent combat operations in Jordan. The casualties occurred during the defense against large-scale missile and drone attacks initiated by Iran.
Incident Details and Casualties
According to an official statement published on the social media platform X, the tragedy took place on July 17. On that day, CENTCOM forces and their allies were engaged in combat against Iranian strike groups. As a result of the shelling, two US service members were killed on the spot. Additionally, one American soldier is currently listed as missing in action.
Aside from the fatalities, there are also wounded personnel. Four soldiers were urgently evacuated to Jordanian medical facilities. Fortunately, their condition has stabilized, and they have already been discharged from the hospitals. Other service members who sustained minor injuries have returned to their duties.
The command emphasized that, out of respect for the families of the deceased, additional information, including the names of the service members, will not be disclosed until 24 hours after the official notification of their next of kin.
Context of Conflict Escalation
These events are unfolding against the backdrop of a sharp deterioration in relations between Washington and Tehran. As early as June, the parties signed a memorandum of understanding intended to extend the ceasefire and pave the way for negotiations. However, the fragile lull did not last long.
In the first half of July, Iran attacked a container ship passing through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Tehran claimed the vessel was attempting to pass through an unauthorized route. In response, the US launched strikes on several Iranian targets, aiming to weaken the regime's influence over the strait.
The situation has escalated into a cycle of mutual attacks: following the US retaliatory strike, the Iranian attack on ships was repeated, triggering a new wave of American countermeasures. The exchange of fire is effectively happening on a daily basis.
Official Positions of the Parties
US President Donald Trump stated last week that the ceasefire "ended" immediately after Iran's attack on the first vessel. In turn, today the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iran officially announced that Tehran is suspending its obligations under the ceasefire deal, making the prospects for a diplomatic resolution extremely uncertain.
