A house-museum dedicated to the French designer Pierre Cardin has opened in Venice. The exhibition is housed in Palazzo Bragadin — an old Venetian palace with a garden that had been the designer's private residence since 1981. It was in these rooms, where Cardin sought solitude, thought, sketched designs and drew inspiration, that a permanent exhibition reflecting his creative journey has now been arranged. The ceremonial opening took place on September 3, while the museum's doors will open to the general public on September 12.
A Home That Became a Museum
The choice of location is no accident: Palazzo Bragadin was not merely a residence, but Cardin's working and spiritual center. According to the organizers, Venice held special significance for the designer, and turning the residence into a museum allows the authentic environment in which his ideas were born to be preserved. The city's mayor, Michele Di Bartolomeo Venturini, emphasized that opening such a space demonstrates Venice's ability not only to safeguard its past but also to shape contemporary culture.
Who Is Behind the Project
The museum was initiated by Cardin's nephew, Rodrigo Basilicati-Cardin, now the general director of the Pierre Cardin fashion house. His mission, by design, is not only to preserve his uncle's legacy but also to continue his creative explorations — that is, to make the museum a living, evolving space rather than a static archive.
What's Inside: 350 Exhibits
The exhibition covers about 1,000 square meters and includes 350 exhibits spanning different stages of the designer's career. Among them are around 130 runway looks from collections created between 1951 and 2018. In addition to clothing, visitors will see design objects, furniture, lighting fixtures, hats, bags and other accessories, offering a complete picture of Cardin's multifaceted work as a designer.
Timelessness Instead of Chronology
The curators deliberately abandoned a strict chronological layout: the works are grouped in a way that highlights the timelessness of Cardin's style and his recognizable geometry of forms. This approach allows the designer's legacy to be perceived as a unified whole rather than a sequence of dates.
Dates and Exhibition Updates
Following the official opening on September 3, the museum will begin welcoming visitors on September 12. The organizers have also announced regular updates to the exhibition: thanks to the extensive archive of Maison Pierre Cardin, visitors will be able to see different works by the designer rather than the same set of exhibits.
