2023 Wimbledon champion and 27-year-old Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova has publicly opened up about how a four-year suspension has changed her daily life. The athlete shared the details on her personal Instagram account, which was highlighted by the Sport RBC.UA editorial office. According to her, the penalty means much more than just a ban on participating in tournaments; it involves a whole complex of restrictions affecting the everyday side of existence as well.
More than just a ban on playing tennis
Vondrousova explained that during her period of ineligibility, she cannot train at her club or use its sports infrastructure. The restrictions also extend to attending competitions as a regular spectator. Because of this, the Czech player has lost the opportunity to support her friends, most of whom are involved in sports, as well as her partner — a professional tennis player.
A hotel room instead of the court
"While he plays, I sit in a hotel room and watch his matches on a screen instead of being near the court and supporting him," the athlete described the situation. Vondrousova admitted that she cried at the first tournament she attended with her partner after the suspension began: being close to the sport that has been an integral part of her life for many years, yet having no opportunity to participate in it, was very difficult for her.
Anti-doping requirements remain in place
Despite her suspension, Vondrousova continues to fulfill her obligations to anti-doping authorities: reporting her whereabouts and daily specifying a specific one-hour window during which she is available for drug testing. The Czech player also refuted the widespread assumption that another negative test result could influence her case or help shorten her punishment. According to her, she has regularly taken tests, including after her suspension, and all results have been negative.
Assessment of public remarks
"Another negative drug test result in itself changes nothing in my situation. That is why it is so hard for me to read when people call me a 'doper' or hear tennis world representatives say that I look like I smoked marijuana somewhere," Vondrousova noted, emphasizing that she insists she has never used prohibited substances.
Case progress and appeal
The four-year suspension was imposed on Vondrousova for refusing to undergo out-of-competition doping control on December 3, 2025. The tennis player explained the decision by citing safety concerns as well as physical and psychological exhaustion, but an independent tribunal deemed these arguments insufficient to refuse the test sample. The penalty period began on June 22, 2026, and under the current ruling, is scheduled to end on June 21, 2030. Vondrousova appealed the verdict to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). In conclusion, the Czech player thanked everyone who continues to support her and emphasized that she wanted to show the real consequences of such a punishment for ordinary life.
