The administration of US President Donald Trump has officially rejected its involvement in sudden restrictions on Starlink satellite communications and its military counterpart Starshield in Ukraine. Washington promised to look into the situation in detail and negotiate with SpaceX to clarify all circumstances of the large-scale failure, which affected the key defense capabilities of the Ukrainian army during intensive combat operations.

Chronology of Emergency Contacts and Washington's Reaction

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, close advisers to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a series of emergency telephone conversations with American colleagues at the White House. During closed consultations, the Ukrainian side requested clarifications on whether official US authorities had made decisions to restrict the operation of terminals, and also tried to find ways to quickly fix the critical situation. Similar requests were sent to the Central Intelligence Agency and the Pentagon, given the strategic importance of uninterrupted communications for Ukraine's defense forces.

In response to the requests, White House representatives stated that the US administration does not exercise direct control over the operational activities of SpaceX. According to one high-ranking source from Axios, the US president's team plans to directly contact the leadership of the technological giant to establish the technical or administrative causes of the sudden failure. American officials insist that relevant departments did not issue any orders to limit speed limits or disconnect terminals.

Contradictory Data

The situation surrounding the restrictions has become surrounded by contradictory statements from key participants in the process. On the one hand, officials in Washington categorically deny their intervention and attribute what happened to possible technical malfunctions on the provider's side. On the other hand, SpaceX owner Elon Musk made a resonant statement the day before, according to which the closed Starshield system legally belongs to the US government, and strict speed limits and geofences for it are set directly by the US military and country leadership.

Technical Consequences for Ukrainian Defense

Recall that on the night of October 14, Starshield terminals installed on Ukrainian strike and reconnaissance drones faced severe restrictions: communication began to be maintained only at speeds up to 160 km/h, and in some cases the signal completely disappeared already upon reaching 80 km/h. Although engineers later managed to partially stabilize the systems' operation, speed limits remained the same. According to official data from the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, such speed indicators are critically insufficient for the effective interception of modern jet UAVs of the Shahed type.

Escalation of the Situation and Call to Elon Musk

The Russian Federation promptly took advantage of the emerging communication problems, staging one of the most massive and destructive air attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure facilities. Against the background of a critical security threat, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy publicly appealed to Elon Musk with a call to immediately fix the systemic error, which directly threatens the lives of thousands of civilians and reduces the effectiveness of air defense forces.
