The October stage of the popular state program 'Veteran Sport' will not officially launch in 2026. Defenders of Ukraine have already started receiving notifications that applications are no longer being accepted and the system is temporarily halted. The government and the relevant ministry explain this decision by the complete exhaustion of funds allocated for the current financial year.

Reasons for Funding Suspension

According to the Ministry of Veterans Affairs of Ukraine, all available funds planned for this year have already been directed to the initiative, including amounts returned from previous reporting periods. Initially, when launching the project, the budget included 600 million hryvnias to cover 100,000 recipients quarterly; however, actual demand far exceeded all expectations. Total payments in 2026 have already exceeded 1.2 billion hryvnias.

Unprecedented High Demand Among Defenders

The enormous popularity of the initiative led to over 800,000 uses during the first three quarters of the year, compared to the expected 300,000 applications. Each program participant could receive 1,500 hryvnias quarterly for visiting gyms, swimming pools, sports sections, and health improvement classes. Such colossal interest fully depleted the annual limit long before the end of the calendar year.

Prospects for 2027

Despite the early closure of the October stage, the Ministry of Veterans Affairs is already actively working on continuing the 'Veteran Sport' program in 2027. Plans are underway to transition the project from its current experimental format to a permanent basis, with final parameters and funding volumes determined by the state budget's capacities.
